The United Nations and University of Portsmouth has been carrying out research into aquatic systems and their role in tackling some of the world’s biggest environmental challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and the protection of human health and wellbeing.
We were commissioned to deliver the sustainability report design for ‘Transitioning to a Sustainable Blue Economy’ – a practical framework that brings together years of research to support more sustainable decision-making.
The framework combined detailed research, technical data, case studies and practical guidance into a single publication. Presenting such a broad range of information in a way that felt clear, engaging and accessible was essential. The design needed to appeal to a diverse international audience, allowing readers to navigate the document easily while ensuring key messages and findings were not lost within the volume of content.
Working closely with the research team, we created a publication that balances academic data with an engaging visual approach.
A clear layout and strong visual hierarchy guide readers through each section. Meanwhile, carefully considered typography improves accessibility from start to finish. We also introduced bold photography, bespoke illustrations and informative infographics to break up text-heavy pages and explain complex ideas more clearly. As a result, the sustainability report design feels accessible, engaging and easy to follow. The finished publication gives the United Nations and its partners a practical resource that communicates important research clearly, and accessibly.
